When the show was over and everyone left, James knew that it was time to start his next show. Not many people knew about what was going on when the sun went down and the little children went to bed. It was all set in motion a year after James had left home to head out for his ‘quest for knowledge.’ He was running low on funds and so James started a little ‘game’ that was only known in the underbelly of the region.
It was simple, as it was just two Pokémon get into the ring with one coming out of it. It was like any battle; however, no human contact at all. The Pokémon was alone, just like in the wild; so if a Pokémon had been pampered for most of its life, then it was doomed in the battle.
As simple as it may be, there was a set of rules to be followed as well. The first rule was that no one talked about the battles. The second rule was NO ONE talked about the battles. Third rule was that what happens in the ring STAYS in the ring. James didn’t need any more on his plate to worry about. Fourth rule was that no trainers were allowed to aid their Pokémon in the ring. They can fight to their heart’s content, but they must NEVER[/i] use anything to heal their Pokémon while fighting, nor or they allowed to shout commands to the Pokémon; the Pokémon is to be left to fight on its will. The final rule was that there were no girls allowed; ever. It didn’t mean the female Pokémon weren’t allowed, but female trainers were forbidden. The real final rule was that everyone who showed up had to bet on a Pokémon, no matter what. That was how James made his money after all.
All very simple rules, but as simple as they may be they were easily broken.
The first few times, James had been in trouble because of some loud mouths. He had been much more careful on who to let in now, and he was sure that he didn’t let in any new trainers. They needed to be travelling for at least two years before he would let them come into the ring—it was much safer that way.
Words still spread though; now every time he went to a town, there was a crowd of young men waiting for him to open the ring.
As James was setting up this ring, there were a few young men standing and waiting for everything to start. They each had their Pokémon out, and it caused the Australian’s eyebrows to raise and the corners of his lips to tug upwards. They weren’t a match for Priscilla.
Even if he looked like a fragile Lopunny, James knew better than to think of him as weak. Every time, there was at least one Pokémon that made fun of the Lopunny for being ‘girly’, Priscilla would go into a fit and wouldn’t stop until the other Pokémon was a mess. It was one of the reasons why James actually kept Priscilla instead of releasing it.
“… Should we wait for more people to show, or should we just start~?” James asked rhetorically. He knew that he had to wait until more people came, since having one or two was no fun; but coming to such a peaceful place, James’s gut told him that it was all he going to get.
Too bad James never listened to his gut.
